Swatchy Schemey

Introduction:

I was very excited to do this project because it did not seem too challenging and yet I got to learn a lot about color swatches and other tools in InDesign. I wanted to use my photostory photos, but most of the pictures had a lot of black in them. However, I did find this photo that shows off some of the colors of the studio. Other than the prominent desk colors, I wasn't sure which color to pick for my third color. I ended up choosing the yellow of the anchor's tie because I thought it was brighter than the surrounding colors and had a lot of significance to the photo.

Original Photo:

This is the photo I chose for my color scheme. I liked the bright brown and purple colors from the desk and also found the yellow of the tie to be contrasting as well to the darker colors around it.

Color Scheme:

While they may not be the most beautiful, the colors of my color scheme where quite easy to find and create swathes out of. I knew that I could use the color dropper tool to extract the colors, but I thought that was too easy. So I zoomed in on the photo and made the swatches by sliding the CMYK sliders until I believed I had the right colors. I ended up creating my own colors aptly named, "Grape", "Wood", and "Sponge". Then I added two other tint swatches to the right of each of my main color swatches. The middle column of which was 75% and the right column was 50% tint.

Nameplates:

After I had created my color swatches and tint swatches, I wanted to see how these colors would contrast each other on a nameplate.  Once again, I knew these weren't the prettiest colors in the world, but by selecting contrasting colors and tints that made my title visible, I made the colors look appealing to the eye. I chose the cursive font because I felt that my nameplates could use some flare. On top of that I also thought it was very professional yet elegant looking. My favorite is definitely the Grape background because the light swatches on the dark is a very appealing contrast of colors.

Conclusion:

Overall, I had so much fun doing this project. Not only did I learn a new skill in InDesign, but I also started to learn about how contrasting colors look when paired together. I found a way to make some odd colors work together and personally I see that as a win. I hope to continue using color swatches and tints within my next InDesign projects because they are an important tool in creating appealing pieces of work.
